So, I went and saw Avatar (yes, in 3D) tonight. Here are some spoiler free thoughts.
It was pretty good.
The CGI was very vivd.. The textures pehaps the most realistic I’ve seen The timing and movements were spot on. I think that’s where CGI screws up. You could really feel the actors through their CGI characters.
The 3D was about as good as, but no better than any of the other recent 3D features. Up, Coraline, Monsters Vs Aliens. Maybe a little better than My Bloody Valentine. 3D is about like surround sound, to me. It’s really cool whenever you notice it, but most of the time you just forget it’s there. Still, I would always prefer it.
The plot was pretty good. This is the only area of the movie where I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting good special effects, but I heard the plot was a little weak. I really enjoyed it. Even teared up a little. Then again, I am a sucker for these “Little Man Conquers the Big Man” type plots. My only complaint was that it was over saturated with the film’s political message. I prefer the moral of the story to be more subtle.
Real quickly, I just want to mention how much I hate the title. Even though it was not something I watched, there was pretty popular cartoon called Avatar. There is even a live action movie version coming out next year that had to be renamed, because of Cameron’s Avatar. Actually, when I ran a google search to find the picture I used for this post, the vast majority of the results pertained to the cartoon.
Overall, I liked it and would recommend it, but with a lower level of enthusiasm as it was recommend to me with.
